The Burnett Burn Center Reverified for Adult and Pediatric Burn Care

Published: 11/30/2017

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Burnett Burn Center at The University of Kansas Health System has been reverified for adult and pediatric burn care, the only such center in the Kansas City area.

The certification, from the American Burn Association and endorsed by the American College of Surgeons, includes completing a pre-review questionnaire and an in-depth on-site review by members of the association's verification committee. Located in the main hospital, our burn center's on-site visit spanned two days this fall.

Reverification is every three years. The center, which treats about 400 patients a year, was first verified for adult care in 1999 and pediatric care in 2011. It is one of just 42 burn centers in the country accredited for both.

Burn center verification "provides a mark of distinction and is an indicator to payors, patients and their families we provide the highest quality patient care," says Tracy McDonald, RN, director of the health system's Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, Burn Center and Concussion programs.

"The relationship formed with our patients continues long after the hospitalization through our outpatient burn and wound treatment center and our burn survivor program," she adds.

Verified burn centers offer specialized care, services, equipment and staff trained to treat the most critical burn injuries with dermatological diseases. To receive accreditation, the center demonstrated leadership in education, outreach/prevention, system planning, research and the ability to care for the most severely burned patients.

Patients are treated by plastic surgeons, board-certified surgical intensive care physicians and board-certified pediatric intensivists. Care is multidisciplinary, requiring the expertise of physicians, scientists, advanced practice providers, nurses and therapists in critical care, infection, metabolism, nutrition, wound care, reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Our burn center opened in 1973 with seed money donated by Gene and Barbara Burnett.
